shoes | shorts (old but this is the current version…only shorts I ever wear) | top (my favorite and I have 3 of them) | GPS watch (old but this is the current version)
I’m just about 10 weeks out from my marathon and lately I’ve been dealing with running a problem I’ve never faced before. The little tendons on the top/outer part of my right foot hurt really badly and it’s affecting me when I run and when I’m not. When I flex my toes/foot it especially hurts. I had to cut Wednesday’s 7 miler short at 3 miles because I just didn’t think it was worth trying to push through it. This is incredibly frustrating because other than that my body feels strong and up to the training, but my foot is not on board. I did a quick google search and it looks like it may be extensor tendonitis, which is caused by excessively tight calves. My calves have always been a little tight so I’m going to try to stretch them a bit more and see if that helps. I’m so bad about stretching but I guess I need to make it a priority now. The only other thing I can think of that may have contributed to this is that I recently bought a new pair of shoes.
As I’ve mentioned before, I ordered 2 new pairs of the running shoes that I’ve loved for nearly a year…and for some reason they seem to fit a little differently and are stiffer than my old pairs (this is the pair I just bought and this is the pair I loved and wore into the ground). They look the same but the sole on the new version doesn’t have as much give. I’ve never been one to replace insoles but I decided to give it a shot because they just weren’t as comfortable as they should have been. I bought some athletic Dr. Scholl’s insoles and replaced the ones that came in the shoes and they already feel a lot better. My foot pain has subsided a bit and I’m hoping that this does the trick and that I won’t have to try to find a completely new pair of shoes. Finding the perfect pair of shoes is such a challenge!
Have any of you dealt with this foot problem before? What did you do about it?
I mentioned on Instagram Stories last week but I’m actually competing in a triathlon this weekend! It’ll be a 600m swim, a 12 mile bike ride and then a 5k run. I’m all set for the swim and the run but haven’t been on my bike in 4 years…so we’ll see how this goes! I plan on riding around a bit this afternoon to practice changing gears and clipping in and out with my bike shoes. I’ve always wanted to do a triathlon in Hawaii and am so excited and nervous about it! I wish I had spent time on the bike because I know I’m going to be humbled greatly, but oh well. I know I can gut it out and just hope that I can make up some time once I get to the run. This will be my 3rd triathlon but it has been about 5 years since my last one. I’m skipping my marathon training runs this weekend (should do a 14 miler this Sunday) but I think the amount of time I’ll be working out during the race should be about the same so it should be ok.
I’ll report back and will let you know how it goes and what I learn from the experience. Any tips are welcome! The big questions is what do I do with my hair? I’m thinking a low ponytail that is braided so I can transition from swimcap to helmet to a running hat easily. French braiding isn’t an option because I can’t do my own hair well enough haha
