Back in September we finally decided to purchase a queen Murphy bed for our guest room. This is a small room that does not need to function as a bedroom most of the time, but when it is used as a bedroom it’s often for 1-2 weeks at a time. We needed something that was comfortable, queen sized, and relatively affordable. After doing lots of research, we ordered an affordable Murphy bed from Amazon and we couldn’t be happier!

This is the exact Murphy bed we have (Bestar Edge), but it is currently unavailable in the queen size, so here is a similar option from the same brand (Bestar Pur). As with all Amazon listings, the price fluctuates a bit. I stalked the listing for a couple of months and bit the bullet once I finally saw a big dip in price. We paid $1453.35 for the queen version of this bed. This bedroom is on the entry level of our 4 story townhouse and it needs to function well for multiple purposes. Sometimes it’s an office (though rarely), and sometimes it’s a tv room for our kids when we’re entertaining guests on the main floor and don’t want to turn the living room television on. At other times, it’s a bedroom that needs to be comfortable enough for two people to sleep on for a couple weeks at a time. My dad is over 6 feet tall and not a small guy and he has reported that this bed is very comfortable! This is the 12″ mattress we have, and I chose this particular Murphy bed because I knew it could accommodate a 12 inch mattress. Above is what the Murphy bed looks like opened up, and here is what the Murphy bed looks like when it’s closed:
We’ve tried the room set up as an office, but I tend to work in the living room so it didn’t get much use. We do have to move the desk (a vintage vanity) when the bed is open (we just carry it to the garage), but most of the time we are able to just keep the desk in the room. We’ve set the desk up against the window, or you could try floating the desk in the center of the room. (I realize the thrifted rug here is much too small, but I need to shave down the bottom of the door so that I will be able to place a larger rug in the room. Right now anything larger gets hung up on the door.) The baskets above the bed are all thrifted picnic or fly fishing baskets. The furniture in the room is vintage or antique, and the art is vintage too. The wallpaper is from Serena and Lily.
We recently hosted 2 families for a get together one afternoon (we had 8 kids 10 and under in the house) so I decided to put our Nugget cushions in this room and set it up as a sofa. (We have 2 Nugget sets.) I moved the desk to the other wall and brought in an old tv. It worked great as a place for the kids to watch tv after they had played upstairs for a while!
The Murphy bed did take all day to install even with hiring a task rabbit for mounting it to the wall and installing the mechanism. It also took 2 people for many parts of the assembly. The instructions are also originally in French and the translation can be a bit confusing. Despite all of that, we are incredibly happy with it and have no problems what soever. It feels solidly made and it is the prefect solution for a small guest room! Have any questions? Feel free to ask them below!
