Two weekends ago I had the privilege of working with USAA to help cover the Army Football game at West Point. I graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2009 and my family has been members of USAA since my dad was a West Point cadet in the 70s, so this was such a special partnership for me. What a treat it was to attend the Army West Point football game presented by USAA! My mom agreed to join me and help capture the photos and videos, and we had so much fun on our first mother daughter trip in who knows how long.
Army West Point Football Game with USAA
On Friday we visited Michie (pronounced Mikey) Stadium and toured the grounds and the beautiful football building where two of Army’s Heisman Trophies are on display. Michie Stadium is also where West Point graduations are held, so being back on the field brought back a lot of bittersweet nostalgic memories for me.
While I was a cadet I played rugby for West Point and I kicked for points after our team would score. Rugby is quite different from football, but while we were at Michie Stadium those goal posts started calling my name. I hadn’t kicked for points in 15 years, but after borrowing a football and a tee it somehow all came back to me. I kicked 3 times and made 2 out of 3, which was better than I’d anticipated!
On game day I spent some time walking around the hundreds of tailgates and even ran into an old friend and classmate who was tailgating with a group of grads and their families. The game day excitement was everywhere, even in the torrential downpour we experienced. Next, we walked through Black Knight Alley, where USAA had some really fun activations set up. Game attendees got to compete and throw footballs at targets, and we also received instantaneous photos that made it look like we were on the game day program cover.
From the unique Army West Point game day traditions to the fun USAA field competitions, it’s safe to say that fun was had by all in attendance. The weather was crazy and the game may not have turned out as we’d hoped, but it’s always a blast cheering on the Army team, especially when the game is presented by USAA!
