Our Trip to Fripp Island

We had a wonderful time visiting with family at Fripp Island these past few days.  Tom and I are now starting our trip to Ireland with his family!  We decided it was easiest to leave the kids back with my parents, and thankfully they agreed to take on the task.

For background, I grew up going to Fripp Island, South Carolina and it’s been one of my most loved places in the world for 30 years.  We used to rent big houses and my entire mom’s side of the family (7 cousins, 4 sets of aunts and uncles, and 2 grandparents) would all stay there.  It was magical and we always love talking about our memories from the early Fripp days.  Eventually my dad’s side of the family started going to Fripp Island too, and often both sides would visit at the same time so it would be a big ole family reunion for me.  My parents and I finally decided to buy a house here back in 2014, so they own 50% and I own 50% of a modest little house about half a mile from the ocean.  My parents live in Atlanta and are both retired, so they spend a lot of time here now.  Unfortunately we only get here once a year because Hawaii is about a million miles away, but it’s always so special building memories with our own little family now.  I hope we’ll be able to visit a lot more often once we move back to the mainland next summer!

Fripp island is a really laidback island that is off the coast of Beaufort, SC.  There are no hotels so everyone who vacations here rents houses when they visit.  There are no big restaurants or attractions like you’d think of in regular beach communities, it’s simply a great place for family time.  There are 4 pools and the ocean is so kid friendly because it’s so wide open with hard packed sand.  Everyone rides around on bikes or golf carts and it’s such a wonderful place to enjoy the simple things.  The lowcountry is such a unique and special place, and if you’re looking for a no-frills family vacation destination I’d absolutely recommend Fripp Island.

My uncle brought his boat this time so we were able to go out on it a couple times!  We saw so many dolphins right up near the boat, it was incredible!  The first time Tom and I didn’t take the kids and it was nice and relaxing (photos above).  The second time the kids came and it was fun, but definitely much more work.  They enjoyed it though and Caroline kept saying “more” every time she’d spot a dolphin.

On Father’s Day Caroline was baptized in the ocean after a church service on the beach.  It was really special to be able to dedicate her to the Lord with my grandparents, parents and a few aunts, uncles and cousins present.
