Decorating for fall is one of my favorite things to do. I mean, who doesn’t love a pumpkin? And mums? And plaid blankets? This is my very first time with a front porch and decorating it for fall has been such a fun process. I can’t seem to stop myself from adding a new pumpkin, hay bale or mums every few days, and I’ve really enjoyed seeing the steps evolve and fill out as the season progresses. Here is a simple list of things that I think every front porch needs in the fall:
Pumpkins. Obviously! Mix it up and buy some traditional orange pumpkins, white pumpkins, “ugly” fairytale pumpkins, baby pumpkins…you really can’t go wrong as long as you buy lots of them!
Hay Bales. These are great for adding a little texture and for adding height. Buy big ones at Home Depot and little ones at Walmart. Be sure to put plenty of pumpkins on all of them, and even some mums on the big ones.
Ornamental Kale. Kale is a great cool weather plant and the hints of green and purple compliment the pumpkins and mums nicely.
Mums. These flowers really do boast the perfect colors for fall. White, yellow, deep maroon…they’re all pretty and add a fun pop of color to your stoops.
Rocking Chair and Plaid Blanket. If you have the room, consider adding a rocking chair to your porch and drape a plaid blanket over it for a nice festive look. The blanket here is actually a blanket scarf from the Target dollar spot, and I love how it looks draped over our rocking chair. Jack and I sit in the rocker and watch the squirrels and birds, and we use the blanket to warm us up when there is a little chill in the air. Hooray for pretty AND functional!
Galvanized Metal Jack-o-Lantern. I’m not all that big on decorating for halloween…I’m more into fall decor because personally I think halloween decor can get a little tacky, but when I found this galvanized metal jack-o-lantern I couldn’t resist buying it. It’s a nice little nod to halloween without being over the top. Plus the metal mimics the planters that some of the mums are in. This metal jack-o-lantern here isn’t exactly the same as mine, but it’s pretty similar.
Dried Corn Stalks. I’ll admit…getting these home in the car is a messy task, but they look great once you tie them up to a pillar or railing. We live in Kansas right now so you can find these everywhere, but I’m not sure of the availability in other places.
Lanterns. I like to have lanterns on the porch year round because they create nice ambiance in the evening, but they’re definitely a must for fall. Vary the sizes and throw in multiple candles of different heights in the larger lanterns. These white lanterns are from Ikea.
I love the way you've layered everything in here Katie! For some reason, pumpkins here in Germany are SO expensive (think 1,50 Euro per one tiny baby pumpkin), so sadly, my fall decor is pretty sparse this year. But I did go collect some lovely chestnuts and strung them on a chain. But I think I'll have to add some twinkle lights and a blanket after seeing this!
Thank you Johanna! Wow, that is pricy for one baby pumpkin! We can typically get 2 for $1 and big ones are $5.99 or so. Your chestnuts sound adorable! That's a great way to add a little fall decor. And yes, I love our lights! The entire neighborhood has them up year round and they were here when we moved in. They make the evenings festive all year round 🙂 Thanks for reading!
