Styling Wire Shelves in the Kitchen

Let’s talk kitchens.  My kitchen is teeny tiny and storage space is definitely lacking.  Anyone else in the same boat?  When I first moved in I wasn’t quite sure what to do with my small kitchen appliances, extra wine glasses, and funky shaped items like cake stands.  These are all items I like to keep readily available, but there simply isn’t any extra space in my kitchen cabinets.

Enter my now beloved wire shelves.  I first got the idea to use these shelves after seeing them styled on The Everygirl.  These shelves are a life saver!  They create tons of extra space and they only cost $49.99 at Target!

These shelves are now home to my wine rack, bottle stoppers, blender, KitchenAid Mixer, wine glasses, fruit and veggies, baking ingredients, and even my cookbooks!  I used affordable marble slabs (from Lowe’s) and trays to create a stable spot to hold the smaller items so they won’t wobble.  Don’t be afraid to get creative when it comes to storing your non-refrigerated produce.  I keep mine in a large, hand carved wooden bowl that I found at an antique store that’s actually supposed to be used to hold rising dough!

Even though these shelves are in front of the only window in the kitchen they don’t block light because they are so open and airy.

I love having all these items right at my fingertips.  Hopefully my next kitchen will be larger so that I won’t have to use these shelves in my next home, but for now they are the perfect space saving solution for this girl on a budget.  What sort of tricks do you use in your kitchen?

So pretty! And so smart to get those marble tiles! I would have been using that ugly plastic roll that they make to cover the wires :p I learn a lot from your blog!

I use my bakers rack from the Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth for my everyday dishes, it frees up cabinet space for things that aren't as pretty. It has worked in every house since then, 1998, and it makes it easy to unload the dishwasher. One thing I did to make it look less bulky is I didn't purchase the wooden shelves they sell for it, they are at least a half inch thick and bulky looking. I had glass cut for the shelves, it is at least a quarter inch thick, that makes a huge difference in the look. And the glass has made many moves!

Love the way you have styled these shelves! It is definitely something I haven't seen before!

I like that you said that one of the benefits of wire shelving is that even if they are in front of a window, they won’t block the light! I am trying to find a better storage option for my kitchen because all my cabinets are full. Wire shelving seems like a good option since it would fit everything, but still be minimal enough to not get in the way.
